Home modification means adapting or converting one’s environment in order to: make performing tasks of daily living easier, prevent accidents, and facilitate independent living. Home modification, ranging from simple low-cost changes to more expensive adaptations, includes removing hazards (e.g., wires, throw rugs), adding special features or assistive devices (e.g., railings, ramps), moving furnishings, adapting to changes in living situations (e.g., sleeping on the first instead of second floor) and renovations (e.g., installing transfer benches). In some cases, modifying the home may also require repairs, such as improved wiring, to eliminate the need for dangerous extension cords or fixing loose wires. Research suggests that one-third to one-half of home accidents can be prevented by home modification and repair.
